Viticulture and agriculture in Bodegas Comenge

An environmental respectful farming pays off directly into the taste of our grapes, our wines, and as well, in the life quality of all the people who work at the vineyards. These are the pillars that support our viticulture.
At Bodegas Comenge we think of the vineyard as a living organism that develops along with other living organisms, and should be treated as a friend to order to obtain the best fruit, because only with healthy grapes, sound and ripe will we achieve our best wine.

We believe that the roots of our vineyards are the central part of the plant and therefore the maintenance of our soil becomes the main goal of our work in agriculture. We need living soil with good structure, permeable to water and oxygen, rich in microorganisms that help us 24 hours a day, even when we sleep, to decompose organic material to make it available to the vines. To achieve this, we maintain year-round green cover between our rows, converting our vineyards in natural gardens where native vegetation develops freely in symbiosis with it. These green covers serve an important environmental function: to restore sustainable soil fertility, prevent erosion on hillsides and act as sinks by absorbing carbon dioxide as 4 t / ha / year of CO2 - helping to offset emissions of the gas resulting from our productive activity.

That is why all our agricultural practices are designed to stabilize the ecosystem of our vineyards, because we know that is the best way to ensure their quality.

In the municipalities of Curiel de Duero, Pesquera de Duero our grapes ripen helped by a precision viticulture seeking the perfect balance between the vineyard and its ecosystem. For this we have introduced new systems to optimize the sun exposure of the leaves and the arrangement of the clusters. Innovations such as increasing the density of traditional plantation of tall trellising systems, vertical cords or double conduction systems are important elements that help us achieve an excellent result. The dedicated manual labor in the vineyard is intense, literally treating each plant independently as if it were a bonsai. Only in this fashion can we achieve balanced and healthy vines, the perfectly sorted and displayed clusters and homogeneous grapes of excellent quality
